Ms. Charlotte Shea, founder and Directress of Mater Amoris, received her primary and advanced training at the Washington Montessori Institute. She served for many years as President of the North American Montessori Teacher's Association and has lectured and consulted nationally on Montessori education. She has served as advisor to many Montessori schools in the United States and abroad.
Mater Amoris teachers hold a Bachelor's and/or Master's Degree, and an AMI (Association Montessori Internationale) Primary and/or Elementary Diploma. A music teacher, a P.E. instructor, classroom assistants, and day care providers are also on staff.
Student enrollment is open to all children regardless of race, sex, color, creed, or national origin. Children from 2 1/2 to 12 years of age are eligible.
Prospective parents are welcome to observe in a classroom prior to submitting an application for enrollment. Please call the school to schedule an appointment to observe, or to have an application sent through the mail.
After submitting an application, parents are interviewed and children visit the school prior to acceptance. All children are enrolled provisionally for the first four weeks, after which the parents are given an opportunity to consult with the teacher about the child's reaction to the program and the school.
Where do Mater Amoris students go to school after grade six? You will find that Mater Amoris graduates attend a number of public and private schools, including Sidwell Friends, Glenelg Country School, McDonough, National Cathedral, St Albans, Maret, and Holton Arms. Mater Amoris children receive praise for their motivation, independence, academics and self-discipline.
